Onlangs is een Roemeense bezoeker geweigerd bij een Bed & Breakfast (B&B) in onze stad. Bij thuiskomst heeft deze meneer zijn verbazing geuit over de manier waarop hij behandeld is. De B&B heeft hem laten weten dat hij niet mocht blijven logeren vanwege gemeentelijk beleid.
Dat is aperte onzin. Er is geen gemeentelijk beleid dat eigenaren van horecagelegenheden voorschrijft welke gasten zij wel of niet mogen ontvangen of mogen laten overnachten. Gisteravond heb ik in een gesprek met de gemeenteraad mijn duiding van deze situatie gegeven: het betreft hier discriminatie.
De B&B schermt met een brief die zij van de gemeente zou hebben gekregen, waaruit blijkt dat het weigeren van bepaalde gasten wel gemeentelijk beleid zou zijn. Die brief bestaat niet. De brief die ik als burgemeester aan de eigenaresse van de B&B heb geschreven betreft een bestuursrechtelijke maatregel. In het pand is in 2021 illegale prostitutie aangetroffen. Ik heb zowel aan de eigenaar van het pand als de uitbaatster van de B&B een last onder dwangsom opgelegd van 5.000 euro bij elke volgende overtreding.
Vanzelfsprekend hebben wij contact met de B&B over deze desinformatie, en mijn kwalificatie daarvan. Daarnaast stuur ik een formele brief over deze situatie: zo gaan wij niet met gasten in onze stad om. Wij zijn een gastvrije stad en wij verwerpen iedere vorm van discriminatie. Tot slot treed ik zelf in contact met de betrokkene om hem namens de stad Tilburg mijn verontschuldigen aan te bieden voor de manier waarop hij behandeld is.

B&B biedt excuses aan
De Bed & Breakfast Bosscheweg in Tilburg die eind maart een Roemeense toerist weigerde vanwege zijn Roemeense afkomst, heeft erkend dat er sprake was van discriminatie. De B&B heeft verklaard nooit meer mensen te weigeren op basis van hun afkomst. Dat laat de B&B weten in een publieke schriftelijke verklaring. Recently, a Romanian visitor to our city was turned away from a Bed & Breakfast. Astounded at the way he had been treated, this gentleman shared his indignation on social media when he returned home. The B&B informed him that it was only following City of Tilburg policy in turning him away.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The City of Tilburg does not pursue any policy that prescribes to hotels, guesthouses or hostels who they should or should not allow to stay on their premises. In a full and frank exchange with the City Council yesterday evening, I clearly stated my view on this matter: this incident is discrimination.
The B&B claims to have a letter from the City of Tilburg to the effect that refusing certain guests is in line with municipal policy in the City of Tilburg. No such letter exists. My correspondence with the owner of this B&B in my capacity as mayor concerns a measure under administrative law, taken after evidence of illegal prostitution was found on these premises in 2021. Following this discovery, I imposed a fine of €5,000 on both the owner of the premises and the person who runs the B&B for each subsequent violation.
Of course, we are in contact with the B&B about the inaccuracy of its statements and my views on this matter. I will also be issuing a formal letter to make it clear that this is not how we treat guests in Tilburg. We are a welcoming city and we roundly condemn discrimination in all its forms. This is an image we are proud to project and one that we work hard to maintain. Rest assured, I will personally contact the gentleman involved to apologise to him on behalf of the City of Tilburg for the treatment he received.

B&B apologizes
The Bed & Breakfast Bosscheweg in Tilburg, which refused a Romanian tourist at the end of March because of his Romanian origin, has acknowledged that there was discrimination. The B&B has stated that they will never again refuse people on the basis of their origin. The B&B wrote this in a written statement. "Oricine este binevenit în Tilburg"
Recent, un vizitator român a fost refuzat la un Bed & Breakfast (B&B) din orașul nostru. La întoarcerea acasă, acest domn și-a făcut publică surprinderea față de modul în care a fost tratat. Acesta a fost informat de B&B că nu i s-a permis cazarea din cauza politicii locale.
Aceasta este în mod evident o absurditate. Nu există nicio politică locală care să impună proprietarilor de unități de catering ce oaspeți să accepte sau nu, sau cui îi pot permite să rămână peste noapte. Seara trecută, în cadrul unei întâlniri cu consiliul municipal, mi-am exprimat părerea asupra acestei situații: este o situație de discriminare.
B&B prezintă o scrisoare pe care ar fi primit-o de la municipalitate și care arată că refuzul anumitor oaspeți ar fi într-adevăr o politică locală. Această scrisoare nu există. Scrisoarea pe care eu, în calitate de primar, am trimis-o proprietarei B&B se referă la o măsură administrativă. S-a descoperit că în localul respectiv se desfășurau activități de prostituție ilegală în 2021. Am impus atât pentru proprietarul localului, cât și pentru administratorul acestui B&B o amendă de 5.000 euro pentru fiecare infracțiune aferentă.
Este de la sine înțeles că suntem în contact cu B&B-ul cu privire la această dezinformare și la implicarea mea în ceea ce privește situația în cauză. În plus, voi trimite o scrisoare oficială despre această situație: nu așa tratăm oaspeții în orașul nostru. Suntem un oraș primitor și respingem orice formă de discriminare. Avem această imagine și vrem să o păstrăm. În cele din urmă, voi contacta personal persoana în cauză pentru a-mi cere scuze în numele orașului Tilburg pentru modul în care persoana respectivă a fost tratată.
